At this time of year, most, if not all of us really start to reflect on what has happened in the previous year but also we use this time as a key point to start new habits!  Usually it involves eating better, exercising more but seriously how long do these ‘resolutions’ last??  Normally a week or even a month is great for some people. So this year rather than being specific with your goals why not start the year with a full ‘wholeistic’ approach to your life with a mind-body-soul detox?  Here are my 20 top  tips to detox your mind, body and soul!

Holistic detox

Be Mindful of your surrounding!

Environmental triggers influence everyone – it can be stories you see on the TV, things you read in the papers, or social media.  Try to be mindfully aware of your surroundings.  As you go through your day why not stop maybe once in the morning, once in the afternoon and before bed and use this time to jot down notes on the day’s events and how they make you feel.   Try to analyse and bring some positivity into a maybe negative experience.

Alkalize your body

Introducing alkaline foods into your diet will help detox the body removing any toxic acids and preventing them from being absorbed into the body.  Try drinking a couple of glasses of vegetable juice a day and eat plenty of superfoods.  Alkalizing foods include wheatgrass, goji berries, Maca, bee pollen, spirulina, blue-green algae and hemp seeds.

Purge your mind

Free yourself from past hurts, worries and disappointments.  Write down your thoughts and feelings about everything that happened to you.  Read it and then shred or burn it.  This allows you to cleanse your mind and bring closure to a situation without causing additional conflict.  Try it, it works!

Journal your thoughts

Do at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day

This doesn’t mean subscribing to a gym – you can easily get 30 minutes of exercise into your day by walking in your lunch hour rather than sitting at your desk, getting off at an earlier bus stop and walking, cleaning the house is great cardio exercise – try adding some uplifting music – it actually makes it fun!!
Cardio exercise raises the heart rate and creates sweat which helps remove toxins from the body.

Get rid of clutter

This isn’t just about getting rid of clutter in your life it’s also about cluttering up your day!  Not planning can leave you feeling powerless but by carefully using a planner you can map out your day – don’t try to over fill it as this will lead to frustration if everything doesn’t get done. There will always be interruptions – so allow time for that too!  This will give you some control over your day and give you some confidence and security in the coming days!

Cry a little!!

Don’t be afraid to let those emotions show.  Keeping emotions hidden inside will cause harm.  We must all release tears as holding onto grief stops us from growing and moving on with our lives.  It is also incredibly cleansing for the spirit.

Let go of Obsessions

This can be down to wanting to have control of things – this can lead to stress.  If you find yourself overwhelmed by a massive to do list – just let some things go.  Delegate – only do the things that are the most important and leave the rest – life will continue I promise.

Count and Recount your blessings

Practicing gratitude and counting your blessings may be a bit cliché but it is a great way to keep your mind happy.  Take time out in your day – maybe add that to your to-do list – and flip through some photos or think about what positive things have happened in your day and give thanks for that.  Having a positive mantra that you can pop onto a post it or sticky note in your house will help build on this.  Pop them where you can see them and say them every time you pass by.

Try introducing Hydrotherapy into your day.

Try alternating between a hot and cold water every 30 seconds or so in your morning shower. The cold water will stimulate causing the blood vessels to constrict.  The hot water relaxes and causes the blood vessels to dilate so this can help decrease inflammation, remove waste from the body and stimulate circulation.

Get a Massage

Aside from being a relaxing thing to have a massage is also beneficial as it helps to increase your circulation, stimulating the lymphatic system and removes toxic build up.

 Hit Fast Forward on Replays

One of the MOST destructive things we can do is to replay painful events repeatedly.  It could be something someone said or did to us years ago but our mind will hit that rewind button and play that situation over and over again.   When those negative thoughts arise just press the fast forward button and focus on the positive things that are happening right now in your life.

Make your Home Healthy

Introduce some plants into your home (peace lilies, ferns and palms are natural air filters), change air conditioning filters regularly, avoid harsh household chemicals, install chlorine filters for your water, introduce an air purifier and maybe even consider a reverse-osmosis water system.

Resist being Reactive

Today just take time to take a breath and think about the first five days of your mental reset. Did you respond mindfully to the situations that were placed in front of you??  Where were you reactive?  When did your mind and mouth get out of control?  Take a few minutes to write down those instances and reflect.  Ask yourself how can you respond differently next time.

Jump Daily

Rebounding is a great way to stimulate the lymphatic system and increase circulation.  Small, portable trampolines are a quick and easy way to build jumping into your daily routine.

Scrub your Brain

Go back through your entire week and write down positive influences, great conversations and celebrated wins.  Remember those fun moments with friends!  Scrub your brain with the good and positive.  Help your mind become more aware of the wonderful things about your life and avoid those things that don’t deserve your attention.

Go Green

Want to attract a few whistles??  Put the teapot on the stove and fix yourself a cup of green tea.  Green tea is extremely rich in catechins which is a type of antioxidant that speeds the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy and increases the production of detoxification enzymes in the body that can fight off cancer.   That means that in addition to looking and feeling great, you’ll be healthier too.

Simplify your eating

Keep things simple today. Forget fancy recipes and eat real, fresh wholesome life-giving foods.  Broccoli, sprouts, mango, kale and salads should be on the menu!

Look after your relationships

Friends, family, parents, children and co-workers – how you deal with others is how you deal with yourself. Healthy relationships support you and make you feel you’re not alone.  Healing a difficult relationship is far more beneficial to your well-being than any amount of spinach that you eat.

Express Yourself

Do something creative today! Redecorate a room, paint, dress up, write poetry or dance.  Try to find a way to express yourself that makes you happy!

Be creative

So hopefully this will have given you some ideas and also make you realise that detoxing isn’t all about stopping drinking or eating more healthily – to be holistically detoxed it is important to take into account your mind and soul!!
