As the New Year approaches, many of us (myself included) set resolutions, vowing to make positive changes in our lives.

However, as the weeks pass, these intentions often fade away.

So how can you ensure that this year, your resolutions become a lasting reality?

Here are my 10 top tips – some effective strategies – to help you stay committed and achieve your goals:

1. Set Clear and Realistic Goals: Begin by defining specific, achievable, and realistic goals

If you create vague resolutions like “get fit” or “eat healthier” these are harder to measure and maintain.  Instead, specify milestones and create a plan outlining how you’ll accomplish them.

2. Focus on One Goal at a Time

Try not to overwhelm yourself with a huge list of resolutions. Just concentrate on one or two objectives at a time. Once you’ve ingrained these habits, move on to additional goals.

3. Create a Detailed Plan

Break down your resolution into smaller, manageable steps. Try to establish a timeline and set deadlines to track your progress. This structured approach makes your goal seem less daunting and more attainable.

4. Stay Accountable

Share your resolutions/goals  with a friend, family member, or a support group. Having someone to hold you accountable can significantly increase your commitment to your goals. Consider setting up regular check-ins to discuss your progress.

5. Embrace Setbacks as Learning Opportunities

Slip-ups are normal when working towards a goal. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you have a setback. Instead, analyse what went wrong, learn from it, and use that knowledge to readjust your approach.

6. Celebrate Milestones

Acknowledge and celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Rewarding yourself for hitting milestones can boost motivation and reinforce positive behaviour.

7. Stay Flexible and Adjust as Needed

Life can be unpredictable. Be open to adjusting your plan if circumstances change. Flexibility allows you to adapt while still working towards your end goal.

8. Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself throughout the process. Recognize that change takes time, and it’s okay to have moments of struggle. Cultivate self-compassion to maintain a positive attitude towards your journey.

9. Feel the Success

Try to use positive emotions that you will feel when you have achieved your goal.  Think about how you will feel about yourself achieving your goal. In Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy we use these emotional insights to help us move forward with our goals – they work much better than visualisations.  Imagine how you feel once you have achieved all the benefits and how achieving your resolution/goal will positively impact your life.

10. Seek Support and Resources

Utilise available resources, whether it’s books, apps, online communities, or professional guidance. Surround yourself with resources that can aid and motivate you on your journey.  Sometimes you may find that there is an underlying self esteem issue that is holding you back – kinesiology and CBH are amazing at uncovering these underlying negative thoughts and turning them around.

By incorporating these strategies into your approach, you can significantly increase your chances of sticking to your New Year’s resolutions.
